The RRS permit a competitor to take certain penalties in lieu of retiring in the event that s/he commits a rules infraction while racing. These penalties most commonly are in the form of penalty turns. RRS-41.1 provides that a competitor who may have broken a rule included in RRS Part 2 [When Boats Meet (RRS-10 through RRS-23)] may take a two-turns penalty. In addition, RRS-41.1 provides that a competitor who may have broken RRS-31 [Touching a Mark] may take a one-turn penalty. Taking the appropriate one- or two-turn penalty usually exonerates the underlying rules infraction.
