NOTICE OF RACE
The Pirates on the Pungo Regatta is an annual fundraising event benefitting the Pungo District Hospital Foundation. It is sponsored by the River Rat Yacht Club and the Belhaven Yacht Club.
RULES
The regatta will be governed by the „rules‟ as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing 2009-2012, except as modified by the sailing instructions. Sails and appendages of boats racing in a “one design” class must comply with the rules governing that one design fleet.
ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY
The regatta is open to any sailboat in seaworthy condition.
Boats may complete the registration form presented at the Pirates on the Pungo Regatta website (www.piratesonpungo.org) and send the registration, together with the required fees, to Pirates on the Pungo, PO Box 707, Belhaven, NC 27810. Please mail your registration to arrive by May 15, 2010.
Registration may also be entered on line, with payment by credit card, using the registration form on the Pirates on the Pungo Regatta website.
A special “no-charge” entry fee is available for boats that will be sailed by a skipper and crew 18 or younger. See the information on fees below, and the registration form on the website.
Late entries will be accepted until 8:30 AM on Saturday, May 22nd, at River Forest Manor in Belhaven, at the location of the Skipper’s Meeting.
CLASSES
Sailing dinghies, and Multihulls will compete both Saturday and Sunday, using Portsmouth ratings, on special courses inside Pungo Creek, or Pungo River.
Monohull boats will compete Saturday, using PHRF ratings, on distance courses in the Pungo River. PHRF boats must have a valid NC-PHRF certificate or obtain a temporary rating from the event organizers. Boats may enter in the following classes:
Spinnaker
Non-Spinnaker
A special Cruising Class is provided for skippers and crew whose boats are not normally used for racing, but who want to participate in a fun event. Cruising Class will race only on Saturday, using government marks in the Pungo River.
A Classic Boat Division is provided for boats whose design is at least 50 years old and/or are built using traditional wooden construction.
Additional “One-Design” Classes may be established when (5) or more boats of a single type (i.e. Jet 14, Force 5, Lightning, Hobie 16, Buccaneer 18, San Juan 21, Catalina 22, J/22, J/24, etc.) are entered in the regatta by July 14. 2
Each class may be subdivided, at the discretion of the event organizers, based on the number of boats registered. Classes and divisions will be announced at the skippers‟ meeting. Prizes will be given for first, second, and third place for all divisions.
FEES
The entry fee for all classes will be $35 for boat registrations received by May 1st . The names of boats registered by May 1st will appear on the event t-shirts. After May 1st, the entry fee for all classes will be $45.
T-shirts may be purchased for $15 each.
Tickets for the shore side events (the Buccaneer Bash dinner/dance, Captain’s Reception, Happy Hour, two breakfasts, and beverages) may be purchased for $35 each. Each ticket to the shore side events includes beer, wine, and soft drinks during the event. See the Pirates on the Pungo website for other ticket options.

The Regatta will consist of one or more races for all classes on Saturday or Sunday. Warning signal for the first race is 10:55 AM on Saturday.

SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
The sailing instructions will be available by 5:00 PM on Friday, May 21st at the Registration desk on the grounds of River Forest Manor. Sailing instructions will also be available on the website: www.piratesonpungo.org
SCORING
The Low Point scoring system of Appendix A will apply, with the exception that the first place finisher in each race will be awarded .75 points and there will be no “throwouts”. A boat‟s standing in the regatta will be determined by adding the total of points awarded for finishing position in each race. Ties will be broken by comparing the total adjusted times of the boats for all races, with the boat having the lower total time taking precedence.
Dockage and Accommodations
Reduced rate dockage for the event is available at the River Forest Manor. Phone (252) 943-2151 for reservations.
A special round-trip lift fee for participating keel boats is available at the River Forest Shipyard. Launch on Friday evening or Saturday morning, and haul out on Sunday afternoon. Phone (252) 943-2151 for arrangements.
Camping will be permitted in a designated area. A list of local Bed & Breakfast accommodations is available on the event website.
DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY
Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with, prior to, during, or after the regatta.
