I would like to introduce myself. I have been sailing a Force 5 since 1991. I found my boat or should I say my two partial boats by luck and ended up with a complete boat that was almost like new.
I started sailing with the Pincura brothers in Lorain, Ohio where I was introduced to some of the fastest sailors I had met. Both brothers used to smoke large cigars while sailing on light air days.
I found out one day why as they did this ritual. This day on Lake Erie was following a large storm that had passed through the night before. It left behind large 4 foot swells and very light air. Both Tom and Paul showed how you managed the waves and with the help of their smoking cigars kept their sail in tune with the wind. Needless to say, I found myself very far behind in the fleet. I learned quickly how to steer through the waves and keep an eye on my sail trim in the coming year, although I never did start up with the cigars.
I took on the role as the class president for the first time in 1996. With the help of Mark Estock we developed the first class web site, organized membership and continued to grow the class membership with well thought out marketing and organizing local fleets and major regattas.
I am excited to be back in this role again and want to help build the class beyond any expectations. With the help of Peter Cherrick on the new revised web site along with the other class officers I see this class developing the sailing and racing aspects of the Force 5 for many years to come. Please drop me an email anytime if you want to just throw an idea my way or have a question about sailing or racing in this great class.
