Force 5 Midwinter Race Week, February 19-24, 2018

Thirty nine Force 5 sailors competed in the Midwinter Championships hosted by the Upper Keys Sailing Club, Feb. 19-24, 2018. Conditions were optimal for exciting reaches and downwind sailing. Winds were 15-20 knots with higher gusts throughout the series of nine races. Coming out on top was frequent past winner of the midwinters Fred Meno of the Ft. Worth Boat Club (Texas) with 16 points followed by Jason Breeden of the Bloomington Yacht Club (Indiana) with 21, Mark Allen, last year’s winner, from the Pontiac Yacht Club (Michigan) with 30 points, Tom Welsh of the Thames Yacht Club (Connecticut) with 31 and Dan Synowiec from the North Cape Yacht Club (Michigan) with 40.


In the “Short Rig” Fleet Jim Bigham of the Sarasota Sailing Squadron (Florida) had 10 points followed by Bruce McCord of the Upper Keys Sailing Club (Florida) with 17 and Rich Baumann of the Hunterdon Sailing Club (New Jersey) with 21 points.

Adding international flavor to the regatta were five sailors from the LaSalle Mariner’s Yacht Club of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Other events of the week included the DoubleHanded Championship won by the the team of Marty and Kim Schilke of the Bloomington Yacht Club, second was Shelby Hatcher and Angel Crowe of the Louisville Sailing Club (Kentucky), and third Will Siebert and Curt O’Rourke of the Mt. Dora Yacht Club (Florida).

Jason Breeden of the Bloomington Yacht Club won the Nest Key Race/Rum Rendezvous.
