2011 Midwinter Championship Results

The 2011 Midwinters is in the books. If you want to talk about a great event, this is the one. The weather was around 80 degrees and sunny the entire week. The sea breeze was steady out of the east with enough shifts to keep everyone on their toes. The conditions couldn’t have been better for the racing.

The racing throughout the fleet was competitive and fair. We saw many newcomers to the Midwinters who fared well and enjoyed the larger fleet and social life the Force 5 Class always brings to any event. It was interesting to see them enjoy the great location the Upper Keys Sailing Club and the head nods regarding returning next year. The keys are a place you will find yourself wanting to return to year after year.

The fleet once again brought some of the best Force 5 sailors to the Keys. The top 4 sailors challenged each other on the water with tight starts and lead changes throughout the week.

Fred Meno once again showed his consistency on the race course with 3 first places and only getting as fourth once which became his thowout.

John Erhard won the Challenger Division beating out nine other boats to take home some medal. He placed fourth in one race and showed the upper fleet that the class is improving and not just growing.

The racing saw a new mix to the class. Byron Hicks has been working hard the last couple of years to nail down the configuration of an alternate rig for the Force 5. This new rig today is called the Short Rig.

This was a sail design by Bob Cullen that removes the top mast section and utilizes a full top batten. The design allows for a powerful upwind sail with a more stable rig off the wind. With the reduced chance of deathrolling downwind it gives sailors another option when they feel the full rig is too much for them to handle in the conditions. This rig allows the class to reach out to people who might need a reduced sail area for many reasons and also allow junior sailors to move up to the Force 5 earlier.

Seven Force 5ers choose the short rig for the Midwinters and were scored separately. The group has to be thanked for trying out the rig and showing that the competition is strong even in this fleet.

The new configuration is reported to US Sailing as F5S.

The new rig can now be raced in local Portsmouth ratings at your club and can be entered in the classes major events. It should also be noted that even when sailing in the full rig a Force 5 sailor can choose to switch to the short rig if it seems necessary due to conditions. This new option will allow racers to stay out and compete instead of feeling overpowered and staying onshore.

The event drew 30 Force 5ers from around the country. The turnout showed that the Force 5 Class is coming back stronger than ever.

A special thanks goes out to the Upper Keys Sailing Club, the race committee and all the volunteers who again made this a great event.
