Mast Rehab

Mast Rehab

I have a mast and boom that I want to refinish.  Currently it has PPG brand epoxy automotive paint on it that has gotten scuffed up a bit.  It has held up well and just repainting is certainly an option.  I was thinking about powder coating it though.  I can get this done at a reasonable price and the best part.....someone else will do the work.  Has anyone ever gone this route?  Pluses?   Minuses?  Just wondering about others experiences.

Re: Mast Rehab

There are several Y-Flyers out there with powder coated spars.  Dating from 2006, they show no signs of finish failure.  It's a neat thing to do.  Now.....the F5 uses a LOT more mast bend, so there could be issues with the flexibility of the powder coat, but that's based on a hunch, not any scientific facts.    smile

Re: Mast Rehab

I had that same thoughts.  Thanks.  I think I am going to just paint it again.

Re: Mast Rehab

Probably a safe bet.  Lots of people use Awlgrip for spars, but again, the extreme mast bend thing.  Good ol' rattle-can Rustoleum is a low-cost risk factor.    smile
